Real Party - Mario/Game Truck Party

Game Truck birthday party
Man, does time fly! I can't believe my oldest is 10 today! So we had to go big or go home for his double digit birthday, and I thought today was a perfect day to share his party  from last weekend, featuring the much talked about and patiently waited for Game Truck. I can't remember whose party post I saw this on, but when I did, I knew we had to have it.

It's a truck tricked out with the latest games and game consoles and it comes to your house.  Genius! Pulled up right in front, the boys piled right on in, and for 2 hours, they were gone. I don't mean the truck left, I mean I saw not one of them, save a few thirsty ones.

Since he is totally obsessed with Mario (as is every boy his age) it was a perfect place to start.

This party was also my first foray into using several vendors.  I unclenched my fists and let the professionals do the heavy lifting.  It was hard, but apparently, I can't do everything.

So I got this crazy idea to make a backdrop that looked like classic Mario. My clever sister in law said next time I should make it look like a giant TV screen. I totally thought of that but I'm learning to rein in the crazy.  The clouds are made from batting and the bricks are foamcore squares covered in brick paper and all hung with fishing line.
Mario party backdrop clouds

I love social networking because it really came through on this party. These awesome printables? Literally, a last minute find from Amy's Party Invites. I mean that, I found her 3 days before the party.  I know. I couldn't find any Mario printables but I have faith. I found her through her Mario party post on Catch My Party, and it was kismet.

Mario party drawbag favors
A Facebook party post let me to Paper Nook and her personalized, draw string bags. These are a custom design, and came out perfect. Inside are a candy Wii remote, gold coins, a Mario pencil and a hacky sack.

Mario party marshmallows
Perfect marshmallow pops from Stix N Pops.

Mario party mushroom cupcake pipes
I can't take any credit for these clever mushroom pipes cupcakes; check out the full tutorial over at Cute As A Fox Creations and of course I did them. They are sitting on a toolbox because, hello, Mario and Luigi are plumbers.

Mario party cookies
I've rambled about Jenny Cookies before, love her parties! She knocked the cookies out of the park.  Seriously, all inhaled.

Mario party chocolate mustache pops
Of course there was chocolate mustaches.

Mario party paper cloud straws
My cloud punch got a serious workout!

Mario party pizza boxes
I'm a serious container freak and the fact that I live by a Cash & Carry does not help me. What? You don't know about them?  Restaurant items in bulk like carryout containers, candy, and oh yeah, pizza boxes! We served individual pizzas in each one, and how did we know the difference?  I put a cheese/pepperoni sticker on each one.
Mario party prize labels

Mario party fruit cups
The containers for our fruit, complete with a sticker. Yes, strawberries and grapes.

Mario party water labels

I figured MarioKart with checkered flags, medals, gold stars for the eating area.
It was a fabulous day of fun and we had a great time, happy birthday sweet pea!

Drink Of The Week - Roman Candle

Friday I shared a few amazing patriotic parties for the upcoming holiday, so of course today I had to share a matching cocktail, especially with a name like this! Recipe serves one, courtesy of Three Olives Vodka.

3 oz. Three-O Berry Vodka
½ Oz. cranberry juice
½ oz. blue curaçao
dash of grenadine

1. Add vodka, cranberry juice and grenadine to an ice-filled shaker.

2. Strain into martini glass, then pour blue curaçao gently down the side of the glass so it comes to settle on the bottom.

Mr. Popper's Penguins Movie Review

Last weekend, the boys and I had the pleasure of going to an advance screening of the latest Jim Carrey movie, Mr. Popper's Penguins, which opens today. Loosely based on the 1938 novel by the husband-and-wife team of Richard and Florence Atwater, it's perfect for Father's Day weekend because it's all about the relationship between a divorced father and his two children who don't want to spend time with him. And penguins.

Here's a quick rundown...set in Manhattan, Thomas Popper (Jim Carrey) receives a mysterious crate from Antarctica and it marks the end of his comfortable and well-ordered existence as a New York real estate mogul – and the beginning of his new life as caretaker, landlord and parent figure to six unforgettable penguins, each with a distinct personality.

The boy, who is 10, went in a little apprehensive...he was expecting March Of The Penguins In The City. But he was quickly roped in when we meet young Thomas Popper listening on his ham radio to his father on world-wide adventures.  Probably because it's the equivalent of us and Dad on Skype.  The little one, of course, would watch paint dry if it was up on a big screen with stereo surround.

The fun really begins when we are introduced to the first penguin, a final gift from his deceased father, and through a series of misunderstandings, soon there are six. How can hijinks not ensue in a fabulous Park Avenue apartment?  His kids fall in love with the birds before he can return  them.  To keep his kids coming back, Popper decides to keep the penguins and turn his apartment into the perfect snow-driven  habitat.

Be warned, there are a few sad parts, (a major turning point in the movie) but things do (of course) work out. Their favorite part? The penguins watersliding through the world-famous Guggenheim Museum.  And I quote "Mom, isn't that where Will Smith was chasing that guy in Men In Black?" See, movies can be educational!

It's a fun family film, with big lessons on what's important in life, and how the past doesn't always define who we are. Yeah, yeah, it's a funny movie with Gentoo penguins and Jim Carrey.

Disclaimer: We attended this screening through Allied Integrated Marketing and no compensation was provided. The information provided here is my own personal opinion.
