interviewing local powerhouses who started with an idea and turned it into a crazy reality. It was so popular, I thought to myself, 'hey self, you should do the same thing, except this time, you should stalk some more of your favorite bloggers from all over'.
. If you know who they are, woo hoo, you are so hot and trendy. If not, then look at that, you learned something new today.
Now, if you were keeping score, I only got up to 7 because the holiday season started, yadda, yadda, yadda it is the end of April. I'm starting a whole new series with 8 more creatives. So to close this series, I present the 8th creatives you should follow...
! Sisters Alicia Powell Geneane created their DIY project site, solely dedicated to creative experimentation. They aren't afraid to step outside of the boundaries and experiment with do-it-yourself projects with half the fun turning a disaster into something incredible.
Please tell our readers a little bit about who Alicia and Geneane are.
Hello, crafters! We're sisters currently living in Maryland. Alicia is an interior designer, and Geneane works in fashion retail. Our passion centers around all things creative--art, design, fashion and beauty. It was only natural for us to express our creativity through blogging, especially about crafts.
Everyone always says you should never mix business with family, but as sisters, you figured out how to make it work. When and how did you decide to combine your super powers?
Growing up, we were two peas in a pod, always working on some creative project together. As we got older, we easily transitioned to a more business-minded approach to our collaborative projects. As sisters, we just get each other. We understand our brand because we understand each other. Having known each other all our lives, working together has become seamless, like second nature, and we love it.
How do you craft and balance your regular lives?
When it comes to balancing any creative passion and day-to-day responsibilities, it can be a challenge to juggle it all. It's important to surround yourself with supportive people, especially spouse and family. We also make time to meet with one on another on a regular basis so that we stay organized and focused on our goals.
Speaking of crafting, I know you have so many to choose from, but which of your projects is your favorite and why?
One of our favorite projects was our DIY paper earring craft
for Valentine's Day, because it is simple, affordable, and stylish, which is important to us and our readers. DIY jewelry can be incredibly fun because it allows the crafter to make something special that can be shared with others.
Readers see beautiful, styled photos but we rarely see what is going on behind the scenes or how things didn't turn out quite the way you planned. How do you handle having to kick into Plan B or Plan C?
When things don't go according to plan, that's when things get interesting! It helps you to learn about materials and processes to find out what works and what doesn't work in the future. It's also helpful to have a partner while working, someone who can help create alternative solutions when encountering a sometimes literally sticky situation.
For instance, our adorable paper jotters
weren't so lovely at first. We experimented with sizes of paper and how we'd bind the pages together. The measurements were uneven at first, but we figured out how to correct our mistakes. Then of course we had to hand draw using a metallic Sharpie marker, which meant very little room for errors. But practice makes perfect! In the end, the paper jotters looked amazing and our readers loved it!
I am inspired by things around me...a pretty pattern may spark an entire party theme. What kind of things inspire your creativity?
Our blog is called Spark & Chemistry because absolutely anything can spark our interest and, given the right chemistry, we can create something incredible. We're inspired by the people we meet and the places we go. We're attracted to beautiful simplicity, and when we see something as simple as an abandoned coffee mug, we can draw inspiration from it. Sometimes we inspire each other, by sharing things we've seen throughout the day, and we think, "Hey, what if we made our own version of that?" And that's how great ideas are born.
Do you have favorite blogs and/or websites you like to visit when you have a moment?
We enjoy Oh, Happy Day! for their darling party planning and decor, A Beautiful Mess for their great lifestyle tips, and Design Love Fest for their design style and the simplicity of their crafts.
I love to ask everyone I interview: if you are stranded on a desert island and can take one item and one meal, what would they be?
We'd bring each other, of course! And for our special desert island meal, we'd bring some delicious Maryland blue crabs with butter and Old Bay seasoning!
So many fabulous and hey-I-can-do-that projects! Thanks so much ladies for playing along!
