Alas, all good things must come to an end...we've been partying all Halloweek with great Halloween ideas to inspire you for yours! Don't forget to enter to win a party in a box to help you on your way.

Today we are shifting gears to another great holiday that always gets caught up in the Halloween hype.  Our second party debuting this week, a colorful crafternoon with friends inspired by Día De Los Muertos.

The three day holiday is a celebration of departed loved ones and life.  Instead of being sad and brooding, it’s a holiday that’s brimming with color, flowers, and great food...the makings of a great party.

With help from Oriental Trading, I planned a simple afternoon of decorating ceramic skulls to become the colorful calaveras most associated with the holiday.

I love long banners for decorating; this cutout banner that serves as our backdrop is 100 feet long, so it is perfect to cover up a large space.

Our large skull centerpiece does double duty as crafting inspiration; I decorated the white ceramic skull with permanent markers, sequins and hot glued flower hair clips that I removed the clip from.  Everyone has their own mini version to decorate at their place setting.

You can also paint your skulls...check out my version for Moms & Munchkins.

Skulls are the most recognizable symbol of Dia de los Muertos, so I infused them into as many party elements as possible, from embellishing the place cards with washi tape to the colorful drink straws.

In traditional Día de los Muertos celebrations, people offer up alcohol to their ancestors...margaritas fit the bill perfectly.

These favor boxes can be filled with candy and treats as a special take home for guests.

During the celebration, family members visit cemeteries and build private altars containing the favorite foods and beverages of the departed.  Our 'altar' holds chips, tamales, buñuelos (doughnuts) decorated with handmade crepe paper flowers and galletas con malvavisco (cookies with marshmallows).
