Today is the official first day of summer and when I think of summer, I think of picnics! It just takes a little prep to pack a perfect picnic but once you have all the major gear ready to go, you are set for for anytime celebrating.
I'm all about easy entertaining and having a picnic is a great way to enjoy a lazy, sunny afternoon or beautiful evening. Let's talk about everything you need....
Setting The Scene
You can dress up or dress down a picnic to your heart's content, but they all need somewhere to sit and eat. You can't go wrong with the standard blanket-and-pillows combo. A blanket that is thick enough for a little cushion and pillows to get comfy sets the perfect scene. These gorgeous pillows from Anthropologie
are beautiful for indoor and outdoor entertaining.
Purchase or DIY a blanket like these fabulous drop cloths from Brit + Co
. This is a great option because it is washable, in case of spills and smears.
From classic wicker to modern versions (I have this one from World Market
which comes with its own blanket!), you will need something to carry all your provisions in. World Market also carries this attractive willow basket
packed with essentials like a cutting board, bread knife, goblets and a bottle opener that leaves ample space for everything else you need.
Of course, you can think outside the basket and try something else to hold everything. From a wooden crate to a wagon (picnic on the go!), have fun with it!
Dishes, Linens and Servingware, Oh My!
Acrylic and melamine plates and cups make any picnic fabulous! Sure, paperware is easy to clean up, but having a set of dishes ready to go in your basket eliminates the need to restock. These stemless wine glasses from Williams-Sonoma
work for any cold beverage and won't crack, shatter or break.
Pretty and purposeful, cloth dinner napkins
are large enough to cover your guests' laps and catch every crumb.
Speaking of pretty and purposeful, I'm all about presentation and a picnic is no different. What everything looks like is just as important on what you eat. Lightweight trays are perfect for displaying food and essentials. I love my neon melamine cake stands from Oh Happy Day
; it disassembles into two pieces, making it perfect on the go.
Do a Pinterest search and a plethora of picnic food ideas will appear. If you are feeling the need, you can totally make cute food. I use picnics as an excuse to make my life easier and buy pre-packaged foods. Pre-cut fruit and veggies, sub sandwiches, and soft cheeses and crackers are simple and easy to pack.
If you are going to make anything, my Mason Jar Cocktails
are a must! Pretty much anything in a mason jar is a must...
Be sure and have incidentals on hand like plastic bags for easy cleanup, hand wipes, and bug spray or citronella.
Don't let summer moments go uncelebrated...head outdoors and seize the day! Do you have any good picnic or outdoor entertaining tips? Do share and spread the knowledge.
